Electric Quilt 5 Frequently Asked Questions

Now that I have EQ5, should I delete EQ4?
EQ5 and EQ4 are two separate programs, so you can delete (uninstall) EQ4 without affecting EQ5.

Before you uninstall EQ4, though, you may want to resave your EQ4 projects in EQ5. To open the EQ4 project in EQ5, please see page 5 in the EQ5 Design Cookbook.

Once you have the EQ4 project opened in EQ5, you need to resave the project in EQ5’s PJ5 folder. To do this, follow the steps on page 8-9 of the EQ5 Design Cookbook, starting at Step 2 under "Saving a New Block or Quilt When a Project is named Project 1." You will need to give your EQ4 project a name. Your EQ4 project will now be a named EQ5 project.

How do I link to BlockBase or SewPrecise?
First take a look at pages 120-121 in the Design Cookbook.

  1. On the FILE menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Directories tab.
  3. Anything in the list that has a red "not found" next to it is either a product you do not have installed on your computer, or a product you have installed somewhere other than the default location.
  4. Click on the name of the product you want to link to.
  5. Click the Modify button.
  6. Find the "Lib" folder for that product. Click the plus signs to open the folders until you reach the lib folder and click on it. The lib folder should be highlighted/selected.
  7. Click OK.
  8. The icon should change from a red "not found" to a green "ok."

I don't have BlockBase, can I link my Create Your Family Quilt Library instead?
First take a look at page 121 in the Design Cookbook.

  1. On the FILE menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click the Directories tab.
  3. Click the Add button.
  4. Name the new library link "Create Your Family Quilt" or "CYFQ", so you will be able to recognize it.
  5. Make sure the drop-down box reads "Blocks".
  6. Click OK.
  7. The new library link will have a red "not found" next to it. We need to specify where the Create Your Family Quilt library is.
  8. Click on the new "Create Your Family Quilt" link.
  9. Click the Modify button.
  10. Find the "Lib" folder for that product. Click the plus signs to open the folders until you reach the lib folder and click on it. The lib folder should be highlighted/selected.
  11. Click OK.
  12. The icon should change from a red "not found" to a green "ok."

I get the message "cannot verify STASH access", when I use the Preferences dialog to link STASH to EQ5. What did I do wrong?
Uninstalling and reinstalling EQ5 is not necessary.

The message "Cannot verify STASH access" can be caused for various reasons:

  1. If you clicked on the STASH folder and not the STASH\LIB folder. (It looks specifically for the existence of *.FAB files.)
  2. If the STASH.INI file does not exist in the Windows folder. (The access is checking for an installed version of STASH so an INI file must exist, not just the *.FAB files.)
  3. If the STASH.INI file does not have a "fully valid" serial number. (Did you use "ST600-xxxxx" on your last installation?)

If you've received the "cannot verify STASH access" message, this is what we suggest.

Reinstall your last version of STASH.

DO NOT UNINSTALL ANY STASHES.

ALL THE STASH PROGRAMS MUST BE INSTALLED IN ORDER AND NEVER UNINSTALLED.

THEY MUST HAVE VALID SERIAL NUMBERS.

After the STASH installation is complete, start EQ5 and use the Preferences dialog to link STASH.

How do I link STASH to EQ5?
The installation of EQ5 does not automatically link to STASH if you have STASH installed on your computer. To link STASH, put the STASH CD in your CD-ROM drive, then:

  1. Choose Preferences from the File menu.
  2. Click on the Directories tab.
  3. Click on STASH from the list.
  4. Click the Modify button.
  5. Navigate to the location of the STASH library files. These files are found ***in the LIB folder of the STASH CD*** unless you've copied them to another location. So have the STASH CD in the drive, navigate to the CD-ROM drive, then click on the LIB folder.
  6. Click OK. If you have found the files correctly, you'll see the "Not Found" icon change to "OK."
  7. When you open the Fabric Library, you'll see the STASH fabrics. If you don't get any fabrics when you click on STASH, then you should reinstall your last version of STASH (don't uninstall) and try steps 1-7 again.
