October 2008 Challenge: Magic Wand! (Page 1)

Design a quilt and color it with many colors. Then engage the Magic Wand tool (an add-on tool on the Design toolbar on the right side of the quilt worktable) and click on the quilt until you find another coloring that appeals to you. Add that to the Sketchbook and send in your file of TWO quilts: one "before" and one "after" the Magic Wand treatment.

The coloring AFTER the Magic Wand treatment. I like it better than the "original," which was the reason for the exercise.

I designed this quilt for another challenge, but because I am about to make it, I wanted to try out various colorings. I used the magic wand to find a satisfactory combination, then substituted fabrics.

I am very interested in Iowa history and have alwys wanted to make an Iowa star. I have redrawn the original block so it can be paper pieced without any "y" seams. I was surprised at the different ways it would look with different colorings. I had actually done this a few months ago when I learned to use the randomizing tool. It is really helpful and produces some surprising results.

I thought it was interesting how different parts of the block were emphasized by changing colors.

This is a variation of a Round Robin center I came up with a couple of years ago. I took two blocks from the Classic Pieced -- Five Patch library, the "Goose in the Pond" and the "Nine Patch Star". I quartered each and then combined their kitty-corners. With four of these new blocks as the center and one of my paper-pieced borders, it was time for the coloring fun.

I used 15 'Shades and Tints' of red. Some of the shades are so close, I can't tell them apart but wait until I use the Random Recolor tool on the next quilt!

This was the first time I played with the Set Hue part of the 'Magic Wand'. I like it! But for the challenge, I went back to the familiar Random coloring feature. Now the hard part is: which coloring do I choose?

Confession time: I did tweak this one a tad. The color of the binding border was too light so I picked up one of the darker colors in the quilt and used that instead.
