May 2008 Challenge: THREE! (Page 1)

Design a quilt that has something to do with THREE. It can be three blocks, three sides, three colors, three motifs, or something else that is "three."

Lots of threes: triangle blocks with three patches; three borders, one with many triangles; three values of each hue; three appliques, each with three daisy vines.

St. Charles, Illinois, USA

It was fun to embellish a free-standing triangle-shaped banner with fringe, beads, and applique.

Used Baby Blocks quilt Layout.
Blocks include #3218, and I drew several blocks with triangles. Border is Flying Geese XII.

Williamsburg, VA

I designed some of the blocks and used others from the library on a baby blocks layout.

I love geometric play! I started with a 300 degree ellipse, divided it into 3 parts that each had three parts, then attached 3 of them to a triangle with multiple divisions of 3. I drew an interlocking triangle link, used wreathmaker twice to make the large motif, then removed the "corners" to create the circle of links. The squiggles were made with the Brush Stroke tool and wreathmaker.

I desided to make my quilt representing favourite spring and summer things that make me feel happy when I spot them.
Three of each per block seemed like good going

I love spring bulbs, many of those in our garden were bought from a stall from Holland at the Christmas Market in Manchester ... so the title

Uses the "Three in One Potential" block I designed which has 3 parts.

I recently dug out some old books on mathematical Chaos & Fractals. When I saw this month's EQ challenge, something like this immediately came to mind. It is a simple, but original, design.

This is a 3x3 quilt and each block has 3 bands.

Simonton, TX, USA

This one is really more fractalish, but is less symmetric in nature. It is a simple, but original, design.

Everything Three

I divide a block in three parts and I turnred the block till this result.

Rotterdam, the Netherlands

My plan was to make a tablerunner and in the middle of the block three bracelets in clear colors

"Three" little kittens with their lost, found and newly washed mittens.

For these kittens, I adapted some cute blocks from the EQ's 1920's and 1930's album of applique motifs

I did a block search on "three" and I used two of the resulting choices in this design. Also the size of the quilt is three blocks by three times three (9). Then I added three borders.

I used attic windows since it has three basic parts. I used three basic colors for the windows (purple, green, red), a light a dark and black for each window, and three colors for the panes (orange, gold and black). The three borders also have three colors (light purple, dark purple and black). Each of the four sections consist of a 3X3 block of windows.

I used the blocks "Storm at Sea" and "Pieced Bouquet" from EQ's library and a third block I drew myself. I put them in a 7 x 7 layout and then used the Symmetry tool until I got something interesting.

I asked my husband's opinion of my challenge quilts and he stared at this one for a long time. I asked him what he was thinking and he said he was just trying to see a pattern to the design. That's just the reaction I was aiming for.

The background block I drew myself. The inner border is EQ's "Grooves" autoborder.

I made motifs out of EQ's "Teddy Bear with Vest", "Teddy Bear with Flowers", and "Teddy Bear 3" blocks. Then I gave them all the same head (the one on the baby) to make them a family. See how baby has Papa's nose and Mama's eyebrows?

Was I having fun? Yes!

This quilt is composed of 3 blocks that are variations of the Uneven 9 patch (3x3) and two blocks that are four patch variations. It is 9 blocks high by 9 block wides. Most importantly it has been designed to work with 9 half yards cut of FABULOUS fabric (like Kaffe Fasett) that is too beautiful to cut small. Cut the half yard cut into 4 4.5" strips. The dimensions will also work with fat quarters. You will need additional fabric for the smaller peices. If you want a larger quilt this also works well as a 12" finished block.

Plano, Texas

Three inner borders, three outer borders, three sections in star point units, nine "block" units total.
I saw a variation of this in the past and here's what I got when I started playing around.

More playing around with threes with nine patch (3 x 3) and three piece units colored differently than #1 for the border. Still three inner borders, three outer borders.

Poseidon, God of the Sea, is one of three Greek gods who ruled the three realms of Earth (sea, sky, and underworld). His staff is a three-pronged trident.

The Poseidon block was drawn in Easy Draw Plus Patch Draw. The block was rotated and skewed and placed on top of another free-hand block. The fish and flora are standard EQ-6 motifs.

Houston, Texas, USA

This is a Tulip basket from the EQ6 with 3 flowers. I thought it was very beautiful. The fabrics are from EQ6 too.

The auto border has 3 stripes.

Arizona

I used the 3 primary colors with an impossible triangle (see previous challenge) and declination of the number 3 in different languages.

I took the number 3 from the 6 Motifs library and used Wreathmaker on it. The outside ring has 9 (3x3) and the inside ring has 3. I used 3 fabrics to color it.

I made a Vertical Strip quilt with 3 different strip styles and 3 main panels. After that I added 3 borders in the 3 fabrics.

My favorite number is 3 by the way. When we had T-shirts in college for intramural stuff, I always picked "33". Most of my email addresses have at least one 3 in them.

This is a 3x3 Variable Point quilt with 3 borders. The quilt is filled with triangles.
